On Wednesday we learned all about Diwali and how it is celebrated by Hindus and Sikhs all over the world. We made salt dough using flour, salt and water and then used that to make diyas. Diyas are oil lamps that Hindus use to bring light to the home to welcome the Godess Lakshmi during Diwali. We looked at lots of different pictures and then made our own and added patterns and details using matchsticks! Eoin put them in the oven for a few hours to dry out and today we took them outside to paint. We were hoping to take them home today for Diwali but they just weren't dry enough!

In the maths area outside, we made sets of different amounts of stones and practiced adding stones to make bigger numbers, and putting stones back to make smaller numbers!
This week we starting learning our sounds in Ash Class. The first letter we looked at was the letter 's'. We practiced the song (see Youtube link below) and brainstormed any words with could think of with the letter sound 's' in it like snake, sail, sun and sit. We practiced making the letter 's' with our playdough and then had a practice writing it on our whiteboards. We learned that 's' can be written in different ways, sometimes like we see it in storybooks or in print and sometimes in cursive writing like we see in our handwriting books. During our Aistear playtime we had a turn at the Interactive Whiteboard where we played a game to find the letter 's' which is available on our Reading Eggs programme. Each week we will continue to learn our sounds competing different activities which will help us learn our letters. Today was Outdoor Classroom Day in PETNS! We tried to spend as much time as possible outdoors today. We had our play time this morning in the courtyard and had so much fun. We also did our maths outside and used lots of stones to make sets and compare them. We painted our diyas for Diwali outside also!
